The World has Bigger Problems

(This post is actually about leggings, but bare with me a sec...)

Here's some facts about the world we live in:
  • One in five of the world's people live on less than $1 a day.
  • Ten languages die out every year.
  • Cars kill two people every minute.
  • Black men born in the US today have a one in three chance of going to jail.
  • Landmines kill or maim at least one person ever hour.
  • There are 44 million child labourers in India.
  • There are 44 million missing women in China.
  • A third of the world's population is at war.
  • 30 million people in Africa are HIV positive.

I hope that doesn't depress you too much, but I think it's clear to see we live in troubled times. So really, whoever created the facebook group called "save the planet from fat girls in leggings" really needs to sort their priorities out. There's much more important things the planet needs to be saved from.

The members of this group (who have apparently stolen a picture of me to put on their sad, hateful page) also need to learn to recognize a lost cause when they see one. Leggings are comfy and practical and as long as they're made in my size I'll wear them if I damn well want to. I won't be shamed out of them, I wear my leggings with pride. Tough luck!

Seriously you guys, I'm not upset, I love my legs and I love my legs in leggings and I just feel sorry for anyone who would waste their time on something so hateful and pointless.

Be sure to show some love to my fellow facebook victims; Devon of Fat Nurse and Katrin of Reizende Rundungen.

Love you guys xxx

(All the facts I listed are taken from a really great book called 50 facts that should change the world by Jessica Williams)

  1. Been reading for a little while now, and lurking. However, this makes me think of a pic The Rotund recently posted:

Haters gonna hate, keep rockin' the leggings! I know I want some, I just need to find some that are affordable for my Wal-Mart budget, and in a size 22. :)

  2. Meh. There's actually a rule on Facebook against that sort of group, so if they were reported I am sure they'd disappear. However, I hope that fatshionistas are willing to work to help out their fellow man. Quite a few did during the LA clothes swap in February, but I would like to see more efforts towards charity and TRYING to help the world's issues, even as daunting and impossible as some may seem to fix.

  3. It's unbelievable and sad how people spend their time doing something to harm others or to ridicule those who are different from them.
Great post and I think that we need this kind of response! I love your blog and the FATshion community is one of the places where I feel good and happy about myself and the world in general. So, thanks for being part of this amazing group of people that only want to be happy and help others feel the same :)

  4. These people have too much time and a low self esteem if they must degrade others like that.

  6. I think people is stupid. You look great in leggins and don't worry about that and about coments of silly people who think that curvy girls are stupid or we can't wear whatever we want wear.
I think they've a lot of free time for try to harm others or to ridicule people who are different. They sould be more intelligent but well, there are missing links living in some placer around the world with only a neuron.

  7. I really love your post, It is great to see that you can deal with it, just as I did. So and now I get out of my bed and walk arround in leggings the whole day (actually I am doing this pretty often!!!)

  8. That's shocking! But I'm not surprised. Facebook is a gold mine for biggots and ignoramouses! I hope you reported the group?

I would also say - good for you. The problem with blogging is that we do open ourselves up to nasty comments from stupid small minded people who have nothing better to do that try and make themselves feel better about the small pathetic lives. However, more people need to kick back at it like you have done.

Keep up the good work Beth - I for one love your outfits and inspriation you give other plus sized lovelies.

    Monkey (fat & proud!)xx x

  9. I'm sorry that these twats have used you in their group too. I agree with what you said though, no way am I going to stop wearing what I wear. These people obviously have nothing better to do with their time than try and shame people who are obviously accepting their figure in to not accepting it (if that makes sense.) Sigh. Some people need to grow up.

  11. @alchematrix - I really loved that pic too, it put a smile on my face. During the winter when I was in Canada I was able to find a lot of pairs of leggings in 2X and 3X for about $10 in walmart, the patterned ones in the pic above are from there.

  12. I love the pics of you in leggings - you're working them with attitude! :)

I don't think there's anything left to say about this group. This is the second time I've reported them, and I hope facebook will sit up and take notice. I felt incredibly angry when I read through the comments and as a result flagged so many of them I couldn't keep count! :O They are also taking pictures from people's personal blogs and using them without permission, which constitutes copyright infringement.

  13. I agree with you totally, F**k them all!!

It's just a sad reflection of our effed up ideals isn't it? :(

  17. I think that this whole phenomenon is disgusting. I can't imagine why someone would take time out of their day, just to try and make someone else feel bad. Ugh.

  22. my motto in life is, "where what you feel like wearing you only live once." people use to make fun of me in high school about my clothes, but i believe in karma and being nice to everyone or a least holding my tounge to mean people. you go ahead and wear whatever you like, you are beautiful!!! i love your blog. xoxo

ps. you have some amazing leggings, i only own a pair of boring black ones..lol.

  25. its sad that people waste their time making stupid facebook posts! I love your response to it thou, but you should report them to FB for using your photos because when you upload photos you have to certify that they are yours to distribute, and you didn't give them the right.

  26. Hello! just stumbled across your blog today and reading back found myself utterly disgusted that someone would take your photo to use on facebook! 1. You look great in your leggings and 2. You're following the cardinal rule of leggings which applies to anyone wearing leggings (cover. your. ass.). You look beautiful, honey. I'm glad to see you ain't lettin' them get you down.
